What happens next?
Some people will need further medical follow-up after COVID. We have some national guidance to direct your follow up care.
For some individuals their condition was managed at home. However, they may continue to have symptoms that require hospital interventions, reviews and treatments. This will require a referral through a patient’s GP to the hospital or local Long COVID Clinic.
People who have been in hospital with COVID will most likely be followed up by the hospital. However, if you were managed within the community setting, you may also be followed up in the same way. This may be over the phone or you might be invited into hospital for review. This may include a chest x-ray or follow up any specific problems you might have had.
Follow up arrangements should be clear on the summary letter that is given to you or sent to your GP when you are sent home from hospital.
If you had a stay on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) you may be followed up by the ICU team. This follow up may be delivered alongside other teams.
Will I be offered any further support to help my recovery?
We hope that the information on this site will support your recovery.
If you have persistent problems because of COVID you may be offered a programme of recovery. This may be a face to face programme or you may be offered a programme to follow at home. You may need to have your exercise tolerance measured, and your other symptoms assessed to work out the best programme. This may be online as associated with this website (Your COVID Recovery).
You may be referred to a particular member of the team for a specific problem that has arisen as a consequence of COVID.
What happens if I went into hospital because of something else?
If you went into hospital for another condition or have had complications in your COVID recovery you may be referred to a service that is expected to speed up your recovery. For example:
- Cardiac rehabilitation.
- Pulmonary rehabilitation.
- Stroke rehabilitation.
What is the ‘Your COVID Recovery’ programme?
It is a new digital programme designed to support your recovery. It has been developed by experts representing a wide range of professional bodies and societies alongside people like you who have experienced COVID.
It will support you to restore your physical and emotional well-being.
It will have an ‘ask the healthcare professional’ facility to allow you direct access to local staff that should be able to answer your questions related to your recovery.
How do I get access to ‘Your COVID Recovery’?
- A health care professional will need to refer you to a centre that will assess your needs and support you through this programme.
- Ask your primary care team or hospital team to find out if the programme is offered in your area.
- If you are a clinical service who would like to register your interest in having access to the Your COVID Recovery interactive web programme, please contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org (please note this email enquiry is not for patients).
